The Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management practices that exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Over 1,500 communities participate nationwide.

FEMA has recognized Marshfield’s implementation of CRS as a national best practice. Our goal was to move from a Class 9 to a Class 7 rating in five years; we did it in two years. This achievement saves all National Flood Insurance Program policyholders in Marshfield’s high-risk flood zone 15% annually on flood insurance premiums.

Collectively the savings is over $300,000 annually in flood insurance premiums. In completing this accomplishment, Marshfield also has the most number of CRS points in the state, at 1,797. Marshfield set precedents in completing the CRS class upgrade, including being one of only 4 communities in New England (including NY State) that has a PPI, which is also the highest-scoring of those 4. A PPI organizes all of the communities flood outreaches.

  • Prospect of Defense Cuts Dampens Investment, Stock Prices

    National Defense Magazine - Blog

There is a strong chance that Congress will defer or repeal $500 billion in defense budget cuts that by law must take effect in January, analysts predict. But the mere possibility of this happening already has had a chilling effect on industry mergers, acquisitions and industry stock valuations, said Jeremy W. Devaney, Vice President and Senior Equity Analyst at BB&T Capital Markets Defense sector.

Lexington Institute - Early Warning Blog

BB&T Capital Markets senior equity analyst and vice president Jeremy W. Devaney was one of the first observers to warn that budget sequestration would probably be implemented as mandated in last year's Budget Control Act. In this assessment for the Early Warning blog, Devaney explains the political dynamics likely to block efforts at amending the law before sequestration takes its toll on domestic and defense programs in January.
